This item is a plastic vial of the naturally occurring mineral ore autunite which contains uranium. A small UV light is included which can make the mineral sample glow green temporarily. This sample is a great test source for testing and experimenting with a Geiger counters, scintillation detector, or gamma spectrometer. This sample is legal to own and is license-exempt. This mineral sample is naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) which does not require a license to own. The total sample weight is between 1 and 1.5 grams. Individual mineral fragments vary in size due to natural fluctuations from one sample to the next. Each sample is individually tested with a pancake style Geiger probe (model 44-9) with the sample (while inside the included plastic vial and plastic bag) placed directly against the probe. Each sample is verified to measure between 10 and 40 kCPM with that arrangement. Other Geiger counter models will give different readings, and common low cost Geiger counters will read much lower kCPM values due to having lower sensitivity. This mineral sample is for educational purposes only. It complies with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations Title 10, Part 40, Section 13, and Transportation regulation Title 49, Part 173, Section 421. The buyer is responsible for following all relevant local, state, and federal guidelines after purchase, including disposal.
