Shelter Types Compared

Compare different shelter designs by difficulty, climate suitability, and warmth retention to choose the best option for your survival scenario.

Debris Hut

Medium

Excellent insulation from natural materials. Retains body heat effectively. Requires 2-3 hours to build properly but provides reliable overnight shelter.

Temperate
90%

Lean-To

Easy

Quick to build and versatile. Best paired with a fire reflector wall for warmth. Open design provides ventilation but less wind protection.

All Climates
55%

Snow Cave

Hard

Interior stays near 32°F regardless of outside temperature. Requires significant snowpack and careful ventilation to prevent CO2 buildup.

Winter / Arctic
85%

Tarp A-Frame

Easy

Fast deployment in under 10 minutes. Excellent rain protection with proper pitch angle. Lightweight and packable for bug-out scenarios.

All Climates
45%

Quinzhee

Medium

Built by piling and hollowing snow. Requires 2-hour sintering period. More forgiving than snow caves and works with shallower snow.

Winter
80%

Wickiup

Hard

Conical structure similar to a tipi. Provides 360-degree wind protection and can accommodate a small interior fire with proper smoke hole.

Temperate / Arid

Quick Shelter Tips

Essential knowledge every survivalist should memorize for building reliable shelter in the field.

Location Selection

Avoid hilltops (wind exposure), valley floors (cold air pools), and dry riverbeds (flash floods). Choose a flat spot with natural windbreaks and drainage.

Size Matters

Build your shelter just large enough to fit inside. Smaller spaces retain body heat more efficiently. If you can sit up, it is big enough.

Insulate From Below

You lose more heat to the ground than to the air. Layer at least 4 inches of pine boughs, dry leaves, or grass beneath your sleeping area.

Waterproofing Priority

Wet equals cold. Angle your shelter roof at 45 degrees minimum for rain runoff. Layer materials like shingles, overlapping from bottom to top.

Wind Direction

Face your shelter entrance away from prevailing winds. Use natural features like rock faces or dense tree lines as windbreaks on the exposed side.

The Rule of Threes

You can survive 3 hours without shelter in harsh conditions. In cold, wet, or windy weather, building shelter should be your absolute first priority.
